It’s always great to see what our students can do with the cool tech skills they learn at DMA.

Take Michael Paniccia, for example. He’s a 14-year-old from Santa Clara, Calif. In late June, he attended one of DMA’s Santa Clara University tech camps.

On an end-of-camp survey, Michael gave DMA a perfect score for “overall camp experience.”

He took instructor Charles Mulloy’s app development tech camps where he learned to make apps for the iPhone and iPad.

Now he’s making the coolest apps, like one that helps he and his brother improve their basketball skills. And wait until you hear about “Doughnut Day”!

What did you actually make at DMA tech camp?
I created a “tip calculator app” which can calculate a tip for you when you are at a restaurant.

I also created a survey app that we actually used this year at my school while I was Student Body Treasurer. The app allowed each student to choose what kind of doughnut, if any, they would like to eat on “Doughnut Day” at school. “Doughnut Day” is now once a week at my school and I was able to calculate exactly how many doughnuts were needed to purchase for the school.

How exactly did it make you feel when you completed your final project?
When I completed my final project I felt really excited to try out my apps because it was a really complex project. When my app actually worked, I was so happy.

What were the most fun things about attending DMA tech camp?
I was able to meet new friends and learn how to build apps. I really enjoyed the campus because it is so safe and amazing to see.

I have attended other camps similar to this one but they were not this good. I got a lot more one-on-one attention at DMA camps and I learned a lot in just one week!

Did you make friends at DMA camp this summer?
I made great friends with everyone in the class. They were all really cool people. There were seven other kids in the class.

Do you think you’ll be using what you learned at DMA back at your regular school?
I already have. My teachers were so impressed and they really felt the app I created was very useful. I also created an app for me and my brother, which helps us with our basketball. I call it the “Bball Counter” and it calculates your shooting percentage. My brother and I use it all the time and I am so excited to be able to use my skills that I learned at DMA camp for something so fun.

Would you like to come back to a DMA tech camp next summer?
Yes. I would totally like to come back next summer because I want to grow my skills as an app creator and meet more new friends that share my interests.

Would you suggest DMA tech camps to your best friends and their parents?
I would highly recommend DMA camps to my friends and their parents because it is such a great experience. I have attended other camps similar to this one but they were not this good. I got a lot more one-on-one attention at DMA camps and I learned a lot in just one week!

So were your parents pleased with your DMA experience?
Yes! They could not believe that I created two apps in one week and they were so glad I had such a great time. I couldn’t wait to go back each day and they could tell I enjoyed my time at the DMA camp.

As Student Body Treasurer at his school, Michael came up with an app to project doughnut totals!

Make it a summer full of rich discovery and personal growth by attending one of DMA’s tech camp locations across the U.S. and Canada.

Digital Media Academy has been conducting summer tech camp programs on America’s most prestigious college campus for 15 years. This is definitely shaping up to be our busiest camp season ever. Classes are filling up much earlier than we had expected.

That’s good news for the families who have already registered their youngster for a DMA tech camp, course or two-week academy. Check out our tech camps, where app development is just one of the cool courses offered.

Summer’s coming…so don’t get left out. Register now and take advantage of the DMA Spring Savings special!

Special thanks to DMA’s Rachelle Harding for coordinating this interview!
