He’s come a long way quickly. Before last summer, Oliver was just another kid who loved music.

But after spending a week last July at DMA’s GWU tech camps, this 12-year-old from Washington, D.C. had picked up so much production know-how that he now mentors other friends “in the ways of digital music.”

Here’s what else Oliver had to say about his DMA camp experience:

Oliver, what did you actually create at DMA tech camp?
Several digital songs (electronic dance music), using Ableton Live 9 and Massive.

How exactly did it make you feel when you completed your final project?
When I stepped back and observed what I’d created, I was amazed. I had no idea I had the power to create such a thing.

What were the most fun things about attending DMA tech camp?
I loved the way the camp was structured, with the short breaks and then the non-stop creation process. I wish I could do it every day.

DMA is the best camp I’ve ever gone to.

Did you make friends at DMA camp this summer?
I made one new friend, and I learned that we actually went to the same school. We worked collaboratively together on a new song, and that’s what made DMA primarily awesome.

Do you think you’ll use what you learned at DMA back at your regular school?
I already have. During recess, I come inside to the library with my friends and I teach them the ways of digital music. One friend actually refers to me as his “master” and to himself as my “padawan.”

Would you like to come back to a DMA tech camp next summer?
Absolutely. I’ve already signed up, actually. DMA is the best camp I’ve ever gone to.

Would you suggest DMA tech camps to your best friends and their parents?
Definitely. I think everyone should have the opportunity to experience DMA.

Were your parents pleased with your DMA experience?
They were overwhelmingly positive. In fact, my Mom even tells her friends how enthusiastic I was about DMA.
