By the end of this course:

Students will be able to…

  • use Maya as a tool for animation
  • develop Keyframes and interpolations in Maya’s graph editor
  • develop digital puppets known as character rigs
  • explain the process of planning for and executing an animation

Students will create…

  • several animations of a bouncing ball to display mastery of keyframes, weight, and timing
  • images of characters in expressive poses, displaying subtle control of the complex character rigs
  • an animated shot using professional-level character rigs
  • a demo reel showcasing their work

Course content

Unit 1:
1.1 Introduction to interface and camera controls
1.2 Introduction to the main components of the Maya user interface
1.3 Basics of object manipulation: How to create polygon primitives and how to use the Translate, Rotate, and Scale manipulators
1.4 Creating custom window layouts: Demonstrate how to customize and organize the many windows available in Maya to be most effective
1.5 Bouncing Ball: An exercise to learn how to set keyframes, manipulate interpolations, and communicate weight and timing

Unit 2:
2.1 Introduction to puppeteering characters
2.2 Making a rig animation ready
2.3 Animating with poses: Investigating what goes into good posing
2.4 Telling a story in 5 poses: Effectively pose a character and blend poses

Unit 3:
3.1 Character set: How to set a keyframe
3.2 Advanced five pose story OR make a cycle
3.3 How to shoot effective reference footage
3.4 How to plan a project: Pre-production and final project prep

Unit 4:
4.1 New Scene: Using the new scene checklist
4.2 Framework for approaching animation and making the process easy
4.3 Adding props and scenery
4.4 Polish key poses
4.5 Create breakdowns – transitions that define the poses of the characters

Unit 5:
5.1 Finalizing animation
5.2 Picking up or putting down objects
5.3 Render or playblast
5.4 Create a demo reel
5.5 Wrap up and Open House
